"Away We Go"

There are lots of great pieces out there for middle school band. There are original pieces and arrangements galore! That being said, I've always felt like there are a couple pieces yet to be written to give kids a taste of the sort of upper level music they can look forward to playing later in band or even in orchestra if they keep practicing.

This piece, "Away We Go," was the first of a set of pieces I wrote to try to accomplish just that.

"Away We Go," is very much an homage to the music of John Adams... particularly, "Short Ride," and "Tromba Lontana," his two orchestral fanfares. Anyone who is familiar with Adams' work will definitely hear the influence in my writing. Hopefully, any band director who introduces my piece to their band will take a moment and explain about Adams and his post-minimalist style.
